In the early days, these gatherings were humble affairs, taking place in the homes of community members. They would come together over traditional Filipino dishes, sharing stories, laughter, and cherished memories from their homeland. It was a way to ease the pangs of homesickness and forge a sense of belonging in a foreign land.
As the years passed, the gatherings began to grow in size and significance. Families invited friends, neighbors, and colleagues to join in the celebrations and humble gatherings.
With the growing interest, the leaders within the group realized the need for a formal organization that could serve as a bridge between their community and the wider world. In 1994, they founded the BIBAK SE (Benguet, Ifugao, Bontoc, Apayao, and Kalinga - South East) organization, with a mission to preserve, promote, and share the unique Igorot culture and heritage.
Under the leadership of dedicated individuals, BIBAK SE began to expand its reach. They organized/attended cultural events hosted by sister BIBAK organizations. Their dedication and passion for preserving their culture resonated with Igorots not only in the southeastern states but across the entire United States.
Over the years, BIBAK SE's membership grew, and its influence expanded far beyond its initial gatherings. Today, BIBAK SE proudly boasts a diverse membership that includes individuals from various backgrounds and ethnicities, all united by their appreciation for the Igorot culture. The organization's activities are no longer confined to the southeastern states; they have reached every corner of the country, drawing in members and enthusiasts from all walks of life.
The journey of BIBAK SE is a testament to the power of culture and community. What began as small family gatherings to reminisce about the northern Philippines has transformed into a thriving organization that celebrates and shares the Igorot culture with the world. Their story is a reminder that when people come together with a shared purpose and passion, they can achieve great things, bridging gaps and building connections that span continents and generations.
